— IMPORTANT —  Student Teaching Prerequisites

In order to student teach, you must complete the following:
  • Students must complete ALL coursework, major and core, prior to student teaching.
  • Students must submit their 100/150 hours fieldwork timesheets along with summary sheet to Dr. Koch.
  • Students must possess a cumulative GPA of 2.75 and a GPA of 2.80 in the major.
  • Students must complete the following New York State Education Department required seminars: Violence Prevention; Child Abuse; Dignity for All Students Act (DASA); Prevention of Child Abduction; Fire Safety Education
  • Students must complete the library, technology and oral competency tests where required. (If you transferred to Post with 60 or more credits, these tests are waived)
Note: A failure to complete these will result in a loss of your student teaching placement!

Recommendations:
Students should take the following certification exams at the times listed:
  • Educating All Students (EAS): take after the completion of PED 263 (Adapted Physical Education)
  • Academic Literacy Skills Test (ALST): take after the completion of Liberal Arts core courses
  • Physical Education Content Specialty Test (PECST): Take after completion of ALL PE courses – just prior to student teaching
  • Health Education Content Specialty Test (HECST): Take after complete of ALL HE courses – just prior to student teaching
  • Education Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA): Complete during student teaching

Portfolio Submission and Interview:
  • The semester prior to student teaching, all students must submit a portfolio and then interview with the faculty in the Department of Health, Physical Education and Movement Science in order to be approved to enter student teaching.
  • The final portfolio will be submitted in the student teaching seminar.
  • When the above process has been completed, and a student is approved by the faculty to register, he/she will be given codes for two courses: the student teaching practicum and student teaching. These are the codes that must be entered into the on-line registration form in order to be given clearance for registering for the courses.
  • Once the approval codes have been provided, on–line registration can take place.

NOTE: All final portfolios must be submitted to Prof. Gail Weintraub during the student teaching seminar. Failure to do so will result in failure in the seminar.

The following must all be submitted with your portfolio and placed in a manila folder:
  • Student Teaching Application (download form from site)
  • One (1) completed Personal Data Sheets (download form from site)
  • One (1) copy of a signed essay “Why I Chose Teaching as a Profession”
  • One (1) copy of your philosophy
  • One (1) copy of your resume
  • Two (2) Evaluative Statements-(download form from site)
  • Medical Evaluation Sheet.- (download form from site)
  • Student Teaching Request Form
  • Transcripts - these can be unofficial
Withdrawal from or Postponement of Student Teaching after having Registered:

If you are unable to student teach after submitting these forms to the respective faculty members in the Department, a signed written request for Withdrawal/Postponement must be received by Dr. Koch.
